Music WIth My Grandmother
I spoke with my grandmother for this blog. She is 87 years old and has been listening to Elvis Presley and Ray Charles as she did when she was younger. She's always loved music, but she was really into it back then. Her favorite singer was Elvis Presley. "Why did you adore Elvis so much?" I questioned. “The women adored the way he moved his hips”, she said.
Although she repeated the same story to me a few times, my grandmother, who is in the early stages of dementia, never failed to mention Elvis and how endearing he was both on and off the stage. She enjoys listening to Elvis Presley's gospel music these days. Don't get me wrong, when Elvis was younger, she liked the joy and excitement he brought to the stage, but as she's gotten older, she's grown to love his gospel music.
Elvis Gospel Song- How Great Thou Art
My grandmother explained to me why she finds Elvis' gospel music to be so enjoyable, saying, "Because I always knew there was a beautiful and wonderful side to Elvis that loved Jesus. I know that he died from an overdose, but I know deep down in my heart that he loved Jesus.”
Every fiber of my grandmother's being is filled with love for Jesus. She's been a Christian her entire life and enjoys the way church makes her feel. I can still recall how much they worshiped Jesus when I was a child and attended her tiny southern baptist church. Everyone was not frightened to shout or say "amen" because it was customary to do so. Everyone raised their hands in honor of Jesus without any hesitation. She struggles to maintain a conversation in its entirety without repeating what you have already said or veering off topic now that dementia has set in as she has grown older.
But I have a strong gut feeling that my grandmother is a devout Christian. Considering that I don't often get to spend a lot of time with her, I found it enjoyable to do this with her. It was fantastic to learn about her life and how much she loved Elvis, despite the fact that her dementia made it a little challenging to follow. Because I adore Elvis, his music, and his entire life.
