    For this blog, I'll be discussing music in Cambodia. I chose Cambodia because my mother's very close friend is from that country. She excels in everything she does and also dances the swing. Her family's journey to America without a single dollar in their bank account has always motivated me. I therefore decided to write for this blog about Cambodia.

Traditional Khmer Musical Instruments 

    A significant component of Cambodian culture and life is Khmer music. It plays a crucial role in religious and customary rituals including weddings and temple festivals. The Angkor period, which lasted from the ninth through the fifteenth century, saw the height of Khmer civilization. During this time, enormous structures with intricate carvings of mythology, gods, and aspects of daily life were created. The musical ensembles carved on bas-reliefs are remarkably similar to the bands playing in Cambodia today, where there is a music ensemble in almost every village. This persistence attests to the durability of this long-standing custom.

Khmer Music 2018 

   Folk music, which depicts the daily life of the Cambodian people and is frequently accompanied by dance, is another significant sub genre of Khmer music. Wedding music, temple music, and work songs are a few examples of folk music. Khmer pop music has become a well-liked genre in current times, influenced by Western genres including rock and roll, hip hop, and R&B. However, modern Khmer music frequently still uses indigenous Khmer instruments and tunes. Many musicians and artists were persecuted and died under the Khmer Rouge dictatorship in the 1970s, which has a turbulent history with Khmer music. Traditional Khmer music has, however, regained popularity in recent years, and initiatives to protect and promote it as a significant aspect of Cambodia's cultural legacy have increased.


Here are a few Khmer musical Instruments

  1. Roneat: A xylophone-like instrument made of bamboo, which is played with mallets. It is often used in classical Khmer music.

  2. Tro: A two-stringed fiddle that is held vertically and played with a bow. It is used in both classical and folk Khmer music.

  3. Skor: A large, barrel-shaped drum that is played with sticks. It is commonly used in Khmer folk music.

  4. Chhing: A set of small cymbals that are played by striking them together. They are used in both classical and folk Khmer music.

  5. Pin: A type of metal gong that is struck with a mallet. It is commonly used in classical Khmer music.

  6. Sralai: A type of oboe made of bamboo, which is played with circular breathing. It is used in classical Khmer music.

  7. Khloy: A type of bamboo flute that is played by blowing into it. It is commonly used in folk Khmer music.

  8. Sampho: A type of drum that is played with the hands. It is commonly used in Khmer court music.

I've always had a soft spot for Cambodia. I adore Asian culture, but Cambodia is one of my favorites. I adore anything that is cultural, especially the music, the art, and the cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed taking this course and learning about all the many nations' music. This course and everything it taught me had been incredibly enjoyable for me.

American Roots

    Rock & roll had everything that the 1950s suburbia needed. While their parents were listening to big bands, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and other artists of the era, the younger generation was dancing to a new beat. To the shock of the older generation, their kids were actually twisting, thrusting, banging, and grinding to rock and roll music.  Black American Blues and Gospel were the origins of rock and roll. The strains of rhythm and Blues drew suburban youths as the Great Migration brought many Black Americans to the northern cities. Yet, none of the top performers in the genre were able to receive significant airtime because of segregation and racial beliefs.      America was shocked by rock & roll. A group of young adolescents protested against the music their parents listened to. Older people generally detested rock and roll.
