Rituals Vs. Music

Songs and dances are utilized in ceremonies to honor the passing of loved ones, the changing of the seasons, and the curing of illnesses. There are some religious songs that are appropriate for everyone to hear and others that are just for the ears of a specific group. Religious music serves the function of enhancing the meaning and impact of the words and lyrics being sung. Church music has a strong emotional component since it frequently encourages worshipers to express their emotions. The goal of church music is to raise the spirit and promote a feeling of closeness to God. It makes it easier for practically all religious communities to worship. Over the years, many hymns have been written to be sung in thanksgiving or as a form of prayer. Similar to rituals, songs are sung as a form of thanksgiving for any given circumstance. It is a means of expressing whatever is happening, whether it is a celebration of life, God's worship, or your religion.

This article discusses how American sacred music has evolved within the Protestant Christian tradition and how it is still evolving as many ethnic groups contribute to the country's musical landscape. Christian ritual music make up the playlist in this article. I recall learning about several ceremonial songs during the Martin Luther King Jr. era. Several of the songs they performed were from the era of slavery, which I recall studying about when I was younger. I really enjoyed reading this article, because it shows the Christian way of spiritual ritual music.

Our hymns sound ritualistic to me as a Christian. Although I am aware that they are different, it is a manner that we worship God. As Baptists, we occasionally have revivals during which we sing more songs than we typically would in a typical worship service. Because the Baptist church is the one that hosts revivals where a different preacher visits us and preaches to us, but the songs we sing are more uplifting, I view a revival as a ritual.
